Experience

I have 20 years experience of working with children, young people and their families. Previously I worked with children and young people in the care system before re-raining as a therapist.

I work in primary & secondary schools with children, young people and their families who may be experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. I also have a private practice at Mind Garden in Reading and work as a Mental Health Trainer in schools to train staff on the mental health needs of pupils.

What do I offer?

I offer counselling to children and young people as well as their families where appropriate. I also work with adult clients as their distress can often be connected in some way to their childhood experiences.

I can work with a range of presenting issues including:

Low Mood
Exam Stress
Anxiety (including Separation Anxiety)
Relationship Difficulties
Attachment Issues
Self Harming Behaviour
Sexual Abuse
Looked After/Adoption Concerns

I am a Licensed Circle Of Security Facilitator.  The Circle of Security programme is designed for parents of children aged 4 months to 6 years. It is based on attachment theory and the aim is to support parents to reflect on their own attachment style in order to be better able to provide a secure base for their child/ren. Read more about the programme here.

The programme is delivered over 8 weeks and is suitable for parents and carers. It can be delivered in small groups or on an individual basis.

Approach and orientation

I am psychodynamic in my approach which means that I believe our unconscious contains feelings and emotions from our past which affects and influences our present. This can affect our sense of emotional well being and interfere with our present, perhaps making it difficult to manage our emotions.

I use a non-directive approach meaning that clients bring the material that is on their minds to their sessions. With younger children I use play as a way for them to be able to show me what is going on for them but some adolescents may prefer to draw or use art materials to express themselves effectively.

It is my belief that through this material the unconscious will be present. Together we can think and reflect on beginning to make sense of what is happening and alleviate emotional distress.

Philosophy on counselling and psychotherapy

I believe that by providing a safe, confidential space for children and young people, as well as adults, they can begin to make sense of their pain. By taking this important journey with a trusted and experienced therapist clients feel understood and heard allowing them to discard unhelpful ways of relating and managing their emotions enabling them to reach their full potential.
