Experience
I have worked in a range of Primary Care Mental Health and Addiction Services throughout my career, both as a clinician and in leadership/supervision roles. I offer evidence-based psychological interventions for individuals experiencing mental health conditions, particularly depression and anxiety disorders.
I am experienced in delivering CBT supervision and mentoring to health professionals. In addition, I lecture in a Postgraduate Diploma course in Cognitive
Behavioural Psychotherapy. I deliver teaching informed by contemporary research in the field and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and thinking.
What do I offer?
In one to one sessions, I offer CBT and Mindfulness-Based Interventions. I also have a strong interest in CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy). Where appropriate, we may integrate elements of this into the treatment. Typically, this is offered as a brief to medium term psychotherapy.
Initial appointments are usually an hour. The aim is to get a good understanding of what you would like help with and develop an initial treatment plan. Sometimes it will be possible to identify clear goals for our therapy in this first meeting. In other cases, goals may need further exploration over more sessions. It is important you feel comfortable with me as a therapist, and there is no automatic obligation for you to take things any further.
Approach and orientation
I use clinical approaches approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) or otherwise supported by a scientific evidence base.
My areas of special interest and experience include Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), difficulties with self-esteem, PTSD and anxiety disorders. I also work with individuals with Long Term Health Conditions, Medically Unexplained Symptoms or complicated grief.
Philosophy on counselling and psychotherapy
In all my work, I recognise the influence of unique life circumstances. I aim to support clients to build on their strengths, and learn new skills to overcome their challenges and build resilience.
CBT is a collaborative effort between the client and therapist, founded on a safe, nonjudgemental and supportive relationship. It should feel as if we are working together on your problems. Often my role includes asking questions that promote understanding or help you gain insight into certain issues. This may feel different to conversations you may have with friends or acquaintances. At times I will encourage you to question and challenge your established ways of thinking and acting, I will do this from a non-judgmental stance.
In order to help you reach your goals, together we discuss CBT techniques and collaboratively set pieces of work/ practice for you to do between sessions. It is very important that you give this your best attempt, however, if you are uncertain about or have any problems with the work we have set together, please do not be afraid to say, as this can be useful for learning in itself.
