What is EMDR – and how does it work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach recommended by organisations such as EMDR Europe, the World Health Organization, and NICE.
EMDR is based on the understanding that certain experiences can become stored in the mind and body in ways that continue to feel “stuck”. This may show up through patterns of worry, reactivity, or a sense of being caught in old responses.
According to EMDR Europe, the method supports the brain’s natural information-processing system to resume working more efficiently. Using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or sounds), EMDR helps people process past experiences so they become less activating and easier to manage.
